Located just south of Wooster, Troutman Vineyards and Winery is right on the edge of both the Mohican River region and Ohio's Amish Country. If you travel between Cincinnati and Cleveland via State Route 3 (3C Highway) you will pass right by!
This family-owned winery opened in 2001 and is housed in the farm's previous owner's large chicken coop. The vineyards are planted with Vidal Blanc, Traminette, Lemberger and Cabernet Franc plus, like many Ohio wineries, grapes are brought in from other states. Tastings are available at a reasonable price and were nicely served in individual glasses on a tasting paddle.
Madam and I started our tasting with the four dry wines currently available. White Menagerie, made from Seyval Blanc in the dry German style, had a nice, crisp fruit nose with slight peach tones. The estate-grown Traminette had an apple nose with some floral notes. Both of these whites were just dry enough and would pair wonderfully with strong cheeses, spicy foods and seafood. There were 2 dry reds available, also. The Cabernet Sauvignon had a full-bodied jammy taste with a slight tobacco nose while the Sangiovese provided a mouthful of fruit, especially cherry.
Next up were the semi-sweet wines. The Cherry delivered the tart cherry nose and taste that one expects from a wine made from Montomorency cherries. Farmer's Blush, a nice blend of Cayuga and Concord grapes, had a fruity nose and a dry, jammy taste. Vidal Blanc grapes make up the Farmer's White and, as expected, had a clean, grapefruit nose with a nicely dry peach and grapefruit taste. Madam's Porch Sipping pick fell into this category -Farmer's Daughter. This wine, made entirely from ripe strawberries, was not too sweet but hit you with a strawberry nose followed by a mouthful of strawberry jam.
We finished with the sweet wines - Farmer's Red, from Concord grapes, Blackberry and Red Raspberry. All three had the sweet fruit taste you would expect from wines made exclusively from the advertised fruit.
