Doing what you love

Many Ohio wineries got their start in the basement, the kitchen, the garage or wherever the owners first started making wine for themselves. And then they began sharing their passion with the rest of us. Such is the case with Winetagous, a fairly new winery in Sugarcreek, Ohio.

It is always a pleasure to enter a winery and learn that the people serving you at the counter are also the ones making the wine and putting their efforts on display. Owners Mick and Tammy and Steve and Heide took their winemaking skills and opened a tasting room two years ago. Tammy and Heide had worked for the same school system for 6 years before discovering that each couple made their own wine.

Those years of experience come through in the selection that Winetagous has to offer. Madam and I started with Redemption, a very nice Cabernet Sauvignon with a full nose that will pair very well with a good steak or age nicely in the cellar. Sinful, made from Malbec grapes, had a slightly jammy nose and a full body that can handle a piece of beef or spicy foods. From there we moved on to Mercy, a dry chardonnay with hints of peach and grapefruit on the nose. The clean, crisp taste will also pair well with spicy foods or strong cheeses.

Mercy and Redemption are combined to offer Blessings, a medium Rose that was slightly dry and crisp. Adams Down Fall, from Gewurtraminer grapes, played up to its name, offering a slight apple taste that was not too sweet. Passion, from Fredonia grapes grown in Lake Erie wine country, had a full grape nose but a slightly tart taste. It was Madam's choice for porch sipping wine at this winery.

Diamond grapes, a white that is a cross between Concord and Iona grapes, gave Grace its grape nose and slightly sweet taste. Very Blessed is a sweet red wine with a full grape nose that was not too sweet and is perfect for summer sipping. Also not as sweet as other Concord wines we have had, Grapeful had the full grape jam nose I expected but was very pleasing to the palate. The last wine we tried was Innocence, a nice white table wine with a peach nose the foretold the slightly sweet peach taste.

The winery offers music on the weekends and has a nice selection of food to accompany the wine.
